NMARA(New Media Art Research Association) is a non-profit group established on December 15th, 2010, consisting of media artists who investigate the present of new media art and experts in integrating art and science. Encompassing not only visual and figurative art but also sound, public design, media, engineering, art theory and natural science, it seeks to mix different medium and merge academic disciplines in order to explore together the potential of new media art, its position in the art scene, defining its idea and aesthetical significance, and integration of art and science.
Beginning with the exhibition PROLOGUE PROTOTYPE in April 2011, NMARA presented The Urban Organism in October, a triangular media façade project which linked Seoul Square, Eulji Hanbit Media Park and Sangam DMC. The triangle sites in Seoul was expanded to New Zealand, US and Germany in November for Beyond.data, a media façade project which visualized scientific data.
NMARA not only presents exhibitions but also organizes related conferences and seminars. On April 3rd, 2012, NMARA published Media Façade and Data Visualization, reflecting on the present of media façade and its art historical and sociological significance. In September 2012, it undertook a media façade project on 9 media screens at 3 sites, entitled Spell on the City, as part of the Outdoor Screening program of the 7th Seoul International Media Art Biennale. A special exhibition of Media City Seoul 2012 at SeMA, the project tried to leave the white cube and expand into media screens of the city. As its affiliated events, ‘Let US Play: Web & Cam & SNS Interaction Event’ and ‘Opening & Closing performance_Let’s Play’ invited the citizens’ participation and interaction, showing a new attempt for new media art space.
In 2013, NMARA co-organized with College of Natural Sciences at Seoul National University a seminar with lectures on physics, chemistry, mathematics and so on, where artists and scientists can meet. This led to the exhibition Dynamic Structure & Fluid, an integrative art and science project, at Arko Art Gallery in March, 2014. Artists who were inspired by the scientific theories from the seminar visualized the theories they applied, and further special seminars and meetings with scientists intensified the development and creative processes. Also, Structure & Fluid STEAM Workshop, its satellite event, continued for 9 weekends at Space Feelux. In addition, NMARA organized two conferences under the theme of ‘The 3rd Culture: Art Meets Science’ at ARKO Artist House: The Structure and Current of Art and Science through their Double Window and Redefinition of Artistic Qualities of New Media Art.
In October 2015, for Hangang Light Festival entitled The Dream of Water, NMARA organized and supported an interdisciplinary art opening performance and media façade project through a projection mapping project on Joballae Observatory of Ttukseom Hangang Park and piers of Cheongdam Bridge. From September 2017 to February 2018, NMARA completed a 3-part international interdisciplinary art project called Reguiem for Hybrid Life at sites including SeMA Storage at Seoul Innovation Park. NMARA also tried to create a media art platform by opening NMARA Space Dongje from 2017 to 2018.
In 2019, NMARA hosted convergence seminar ‘AI and Robotics as ART’ and also organized and supported ‘A Night of Women in New Media Art’. NMARA organized and made an interdisciplinary art performance project called ‘link’. By realizing various experiments in art and technology into different art forms, NMARA is seeking to establish a unique ecology and system of media art.
